Couple’s secrets for long marriage

May 31st, 2005

Australia was on my mind today because some friends of my parents dropped in for a surprise visit. They live in Australia and so it was indeed a surprise ! I have seen them on their visits here several times over my lifetime, and it was good to see them for the short time I was able as I was leaving for work at the time. I found this great story in an Australian newspaper about a British couple.

The Australian: Couple’s secrets for long marriage [June 01, 2005]

A BRITISH couple recognised as having had the world’s longest marriage recorded were celebrating their 80th anniversary today, and revealed the secret to wedded bliss as never letting arguments fester.

Or, as 105-year-old Percy Arrowsmith put it more succinctly, the regular use of two words: “Yes, dear.”

Potato, patato ;)

Mr Arrowsmith and his 100-year-old wife, Florence, were married on June 1, 1925, about the time a little-known politician, Adolf Hitler, was putting the finishing touches to Mein Kampf.

A series of newspapers featured their story today, with Mrs Arrowsmith attributing the success of their union to hard work and never going to bed with an argument unresolved.

It has not been easy, but worth every minute because he is much more than my best friend: he is the love of my life,” she said.

At a time when divorce rates are only rising and people more and more op to live together instead of getting married, this is a great story.

It takes work, but it is possible to stay married when both people are willing.

Memorial Day

May 30th, 2005

Memorial Day

The first Memorial Day was observed on May 30, 1868. Flowers were placed on the graves of the soldiers lost in the Civil War … for both sides. Now, Memorial Day honors all men and women who have served our country, honorably and courageously giving their lives in defense of freedom.

Our citizens live in freedom because patriots are willing to serve and sacrifice for our liberty. And on Monday, I will lay a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery in honor of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, a victory for freedom in which more than 400,000 Americans gave their lives. Today a new generation of Americans is making its own sacrifice on behalf of peace and freedom, and some have given their lives.
~ President Bush’s radio address on May 28, 2005

Memorial Day is about more than a three-day weekend, hamburgers , and going out on the lake. It is a somber day to remember all those who have sacrificed their lives for our daily freedoms. My family and I visited the Audie Murphy Memorial in Greenville, Tx. earlier today. It is a very nice memorial for Audie Murphy and the people from Greenville who have lost their lives for their country. Here are some of the quotes, engraved in stone, from the Memorial, that especially caught my attention…

To be prepared for war, is the most effective means of preserving peace.
~ President George Washington

Let us never become so comfortable with our freedom, that we forget the immeasurable sacrifice by which it was achieved.
~ General Dwight D. Eisenhower

No man is entitled to blessings of freedom, unless he is diligent in its preservation.
~ General Douglas MacArthur

The true heroes, the real heroes, are the boys who fought and died and will never come home.
~ Audie Murphy

I linked to some music yesterday, today I am linking to some dramatic images. Pictures really can speak a thousand words and on today .. these pictures honor our fighting military both home and abroad.

Honoring thru music

May 29th, 2005

My family had a few WWII veterans and several more that were like family. One of those men was Preston “Pug” Harris, who was listed as killed in action on Nov. 22, 1944, a mere 8 days shy of his 24th birthday. His remains were never found … until a German construction crew uncovered a shallow grave. They quickly contacted the proper authorities and finally in March of this year … a funeral for “Pug” was held in Greenville, Texas. The Army chaplain that conducted the service, an immigrant, is in this country because people like Pug died to keep freedom alive. (More on Pug is here, here, and here.)

At the end of this post, there are some music related links. If you only go to one link … I believe the one for Cliff Soon’s song “If I Fall …” would be the one that is most appropriate for these times. He was “Born in Singapore, raised in Malaysia; Chinese by birth but American at heart” and has a great tribute in the form of a music video.

Earlier this year, I was at a seminar that had such speakers as Rudolph W. Giuliani and General Tommy Franks. Their speeches were very memorable indeed but one of the most dramatic moments came from a previous speaker. Krish Dhanam, born in India and now a very successful business man in America, asked for every man and woman who had ever served in the military in any way, shape, fashion, or form to stand … “So that this immigrant can thank you” for his being able to be here in America and be a success. If you ever get the chance to hear Krish speak … take it. From another Tx blogger:

Next, a Zigler protege named Krish Dhanam spoke on goal achievement. He also was very good. What I took from his presentation was this: he is from India, the world’s largest democracy, and he love, love, loves America. He has seen the other side of the fence and not only is the grass greener here, but, there is no grass there. Put that in your hash-pipes and smoke it lefties. America is great, just ask an immigrant.

Now on to the music — As a platform for ideas, morals, criticisms, and honors, music is a powerful aspect of our culture. Sometimes our music does a better job of honoring those who so greatly deserve it, than any other spoken words can.

Here are some highlights from just a few of our many patriotic songs:

America the Beautiful

O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife.
Who more than self the country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!

U.S. Air Force Anthem: Off We Go!

Here’s a toast to the host of those
Who love the vastness of the sky,
To a friend we send the message
Of his brother men who fly.
We drink to those who gave their all of old,
Then down we roar, to score the rainbow’s pot of gold.
A toast to the host of men we boast the US Air Force.

U.S. Marine Corps Hymn

From the Halls of Montezuma, To the Shores of Tripoli;
We fight our country’s battles, In the air, on land and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine.

The U.S. Army Anthem: The Caissons Go Rolling Along

In the storm, in the night, Action left or action right,
See those Caissons go rolling along,
Limber front, limber rear,
Prepare to mount your cannoneer,
And those Caissons go rolling along.

U.S. Navy Hymn: Eternal Father, Strong to Save

O Trinity of love and power!
Our brethren shield in danger’s hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,

Protect them wheresoe’er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

U.S. Coast Guard Anthem: Semper Paratus (Always Ready)

We’re always ready for the call, We place our trust in Thee.
Through howling gale and shot and shell, To win our victory.
“Semper Paratus” is our guide, Our pledge, our motto, too.
We’re “Always Ready,” do or die!
Aye! Coast Guard, we fight for you.

Ballad of the Green Berets Lyrics written by SSgt Barry Sadler

Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret

Silver wings upon their chest, These are men, America’s best
One hundred men will test today,
But only three win the Green Beret

Missing Man Table

May 28th, 2005

I am sure if any of you have ever been to an Air Show where there was a fighter fly-over … you have seen the Missing Man Formation. Four jets fly in close formation and one suddenly flies straight up and the three remaining continue to fly strong, but clearly missing someone.

A tradition lesser-known is the Missing Man Table Ceremony. My cousin, Sara (Sawa), sent me this article from the Washington Times: Empty table honors all U.S. MIAs, POWs.

The table is set with a white tablecloth, a black napkin and white candle, and a plate with only a slice of lemon and salt. An empty chair leans against the table.

The tradition, little known to the general public, of setting an empty table with a white tablecloth in remembrance of prisoners of war and those missing in action had its beginnings with a group of fighter pilots who flew in Vietnam.

I found the significance of each detail at a website for Korea-Cold War Families of the Missing.

The Missing Man Table Ceremony

Set for six, the empty places represent Americans still [our men] missing from each of the five services — Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard – and civilians. This Honors Ceremony symbolizes that they are with us, here in spirit.

The table is round — to show our everlasting concern for our missing men.

The tablecloth is white — symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to duty.

The single red rose, displayed in a vase, reminds us of the life of each of the missing, and the[ir] loved ones and friends of these Americans who keep the faith, awaiting answers.

The vase is tied with a red ribbon, symbol of our continued determination to account for our missing.

A slice of lemon on the bread plate is to remind us of the bitter fate of those captured and missing in a foreign land.

A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by those missing and their families who seek answers.

The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.

The glass is inverted — to symbolize their inability to share this evening’s [morning’s/day’s] toast.

The chairs are empty — they are missing.

There is also a special table ceremony for POW’s and MIA’s. The following is the slight variation observed for all those who are considered prisoners of war or listed as missing in action.

This Table set for one is small — Symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against his oppressors. Remember!

The Tablecloth is white — Symbolizing the purity of their intentions to respond to their country’s call to arms. Remember!

The single Red Rose displayed in a vase reminds us of the families and loved ones of our comrades-in-arms who keep the faith awaiting their return. Remember!

The Red Ribbon tied so prominently on the vase is reminiscent of the red ribbon worn upon the lapel and breasts of thousands who bear witness to their unyielding determination to demand a proper accounting of our missing. Remember!

The Candle, the candle is lit — Symbolizing the upward reach of their unconquerable spirit. Remember!

A Slice of Lemon is on the bread plate to remind us of their bitter fate. Remember!

There is Salt upon the bread plate — Symbolic of the families tears as they wait. Remember!

The Glass is inverted — They cannot toast with us this night. Remember!

The Chair — The chair is empty. They are not here. Remember!

The Washington Times article also refers to a new book, “America’s White Table,” written by Margot Theis Raven who “would like to see the tradition of the white table spread to homes and restaurants across the nation.” The book describes how a young girl helps her mother prepare the table for a special dinner while her mother explains the significance of each object. I have not seen this book but I am going to buy it when I see it next. If it is as good as I think it will be, every house in America should have one.

The table is “the most important image we can ever have, and it’s not political,” she [Raven] said. “Even the flag can get politicized. This has no party and no agenda except that a person said ‘yes’ to duty, and that is always to be honored.”

I am getting all choked up just writing this. To make it even more real … I have this page which has the lyrics and music to “Some Gave All” by Billy Ray Cyrus playing in the background.

I remember I was in 6th grade when Desert Storm started. One of the boys in my class had been visiting his grandmother for the summer. Nothing unusual about that … except that he was from Kuwait … and he was in my class because he could not go home after Iraq invaded his country. He and I were in the same high school and we graduated together in 1997 … as far as I know he never was able to go back home. He was (and I am sure still is) a really nice guy. We talked our senior year about that 6th grade class and everything that occurred since.

I listened to KSCS 96.3, the local country station then (and still do sometimes) and the song Some Gave All always gave me chills … even in 6th grade and all the way to now. I am sure it always will.

Love your country and live with pride
And don’t forget those who died
America can’t you see

All gave some and some gave all
And some stood through for the red, white and blue
And some had to fall
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties and recall

Some Gave All

    Some gave all

A sad twist in Germany’s welfare reform

    May 26th, 2005

My mom brought me an article that came in at her office … “An Immoral Choice” from the Times and Seasons section of the May-June 2005 issue of The Lamplighter.

The London Telegraph recently reported that a 25 year old waitress in Germany was given the choice of either becoming a prostitute or losing her unemployment benefits!

Prostitution was legalized in Germany two years ago and brothel owners, who must pay taxes now like all other businesses, were granted access to official government databases of jobseekers.

Under Germany’s welfare reform’s, any woman under 55 who has seen out of work more than a year can be forced to take any available job — including one in the “sex-industry” — or else lose her unemployment benefit.

Merchthild Garweg, a lawyer from Hamburg who specializes in labor cases said: “There is now nothing in the law to stop women from being set into the sex industry. The new regulations say that working in the sex industry is not immoral any more, and so jobs in that industry cannot be turned down without risk to benefits.”

“No way this is true” was my first response. I started trying to find articles to prove me right and could not find much of anything either way. It now seems that I am half-right. This being a controversial issue by default, there are strong opinions on both sides and the validity of the implication is still unclear to me.

When I am writing a post that involves internet research, I open a new window so that that all the tabs in that window are related to the post. (Yet another reason to use Firefox!) This one set a record with 15 tabs, and that is just scratching the surface.

The article that “started” this latest debate in Germany’s legalization of prostitution is from the London Telegraph. The article in question is from January 30, 2005 entitled ‘If you don’t take a job as a prostitute, we can stop your benefits’ and written by Clare Chapman.

The government had considered making brothels an exception on moral grounds, but decided that it would be too difficult to distinguish them from bars. As a result, job centres must treat employers looking for a prostitute in the same way as those looking for a dental nurse.

When the waitress looked into suing the job centre, she found out that it had not broken the law. Job centres that refuse to penalise people who turn down a job by cutting their benefits face legal action from the potential employer.

With unemployment over 5 million, a record high, the German government is desperate to find people jobs. On the surface, the new welfare system of denying benefits to those who turn down valid jobs, is to do just that .. find people jobs and lower their rampant unemployment. A valid job now includes prostitution and any related job in the sex industry. So it seems logical to me that the same people who consider prostitution no longer immoral by law and that it is any like any other job … would feel the penalties for refusing that valid job should be implemented.

Canada is also considering legalizing prostitution much to the dismay of Daniel Timmons who is “Proud to be Canadian.”

The “world’s oldest profession” is merely a euphemism to disguise the dark truth. Prostitution has always been, and always will be, a sordid and pathetic practice. It diminishes the dignity and sanctity of the human body, where fleeting moments of carnal excitement are bought and sold.

Prostitution exploits the truly vulnerable, young women from broken homes and on substance abuse, for the selfish pleasure of men who betray their wives, dishonour their children, and disrespect themselves. To fully legalize prostitution wouldn’t control or curtail such disgraces, but rather sanction and expand them.

Going back to the original issue … there are a few sites that are claiming that while the penalty of refusing benefits is accurate … it will make an exception for those refusing to work in a brothel.

“And if a prostitute quits her job because she’s sick of it, she won’t face the penalties we usually impose on people who voluntarily give up work.”

~ reports the Washington Times. How nice of them! I am still not convinced that the penalties wound not be enforced and the ones saying that this claim is false are not all that convincing to me. Snopes claims its false because they “were initially skeptical about the literal truth of the version reported in the English press” and it points to a German article that “evidently” stated that the possibility was present and “Although it claimed there had been “isolated cases” of such, it did not provide any source or documentation to back up that statement.” So of course it does not happen! :?

Another twist I had not considered … from JimG @ The Intolerable Banality of Evil

But there is a second element to this story that isn’t exactly from the liberal playbook. Reconsider the above quoted statement. “There is now nothing in the law to stop women from being sent into the sex industry.” (Emphasis added.) Why only women? I’ve been to Germany. It has a large and vibrant gay community. (And let’s face it, men are the primary consumers of the services of sex industry workers – male and female.) Imagine, even in liberal Europe, if an unemployed straight man was required to have sex with men or lose his benefits. The problem would be fixed - pronto.

Legalization of prostitution for all the “logical” benefits the supporters claim will occur … usually fail miserably. One benefit is to clear up police time to investigate other crimes and free up court time used to prosecute offenders. This is true, it would do that .. as it would when ANY crime is suddenly considered legal … car theft (you have insurance, why punish someone who needs a car), speeding (we all do it at one time or another, which means that it should be legal), name any crime and there is a illogical argument that seems logical to some.

When it [Germany’s legalization] was set up there was much talk of securing proper contracts, proper health insurance, but a lot of this hasn’t materialized because of big holes in the legislation,” said Berlin’s Hydra prostitute advice center spokesman Marion Detlefs.

Sweden legalized prostitution and gave it a good try but none of the “benefits” that were supposed to happen ever materialized.

The country [Sweden] - which legalized prostitution 30 years ago - recriminalized it in 1998, after complaints that legalization had solved few of the problems it set out to address.”

And here is a real thinker … arrest and prosecute offenders and crime goes down!

Sweden has found that much of the vast profit generated by the global prostitution industry goes into the pockets of human traffickers. In response, to fight human trafficking and promote gender equality, Sweden has aggressively prosecuted sex buyers, pimps, and brothel owners since 1999. Two years into innovative focus on punishing the traffickers and buyers, rather than the female victims, Sweden has seen a 50 percent drop in women used in prostitution and a 75 percent decline in sex buying.

I know Germany has struggled in defining their post-war identity. In the grand scheme of things 60 years is not a long time. This is no excuse to try to solve one problem (unemployment) by legalizing prostitution. The only people who would support legalization are the ones who can profit more from it and those who do not want to get arrested. I don’t think either group deserves any help from the government of any country.

This is Chilling … and very sad.

Today I missed my Japanese class again, since I have gotten a bad throat. I only went to the class once this week, so I am probably so far behind now. I will catch up in the summer tho so no worries hehe. Anyway today has been weird, at 3 some guy ringed the bell. I went down and recognized it was my sister’s former boyfriend. He told me he wants to get his fishing poles back. I told him to wait downstair while I get them for him. While I was searching them, he is already in the house. He is still here right now, smoking, walking all around the house with his shoes on which btw I just washed the floor 2 days ago! Hopefully he will leave soon, oh yeah working on the jap report as we speak!

That post was made by nineteen-year old Simon Ng. Here is a pic of Simon and his sister, Sharon, who are Hong Kong immigrants and live together in a NY apartment.

Simon and Sharon Ng were found later that day brutally murdered … stabbed to death with a butcher knife. The main lead to the true suspect, Sharon’s ex-boyfriend, was found in last Simon’s blog entry.

Cops zeroed in on Lin, who once dated the woman, because Ng typed a journal entry into his computer fingering his sister’s ex-boyfriend as the suspect, police said.

Sgt. Michael Breidenbach, head of the 107th Precinct detective squad, said the entry turned Lin’s alibi upside down.

“That puts him in the apartment,” said Breidenbach, adding that investigators got Lin to confess after confronting him with the entry.

A small comfort, but maybe somehow the fact that Simon helped lead police to his & his sister’s killer, will bring a little closure to their parents.

    14. You actually get these jokes and are “fixin to” send them to your friends.

    15. Finally, you are 100% Texan if you have ever heard this conversation:

    “You wanna coke?”

    “Yeah.”

    “What kind?”

    Dr. Pepper.”

I love stuff like this!

I was “channel surfing” through some blogs and saw a picture of Obi-Wan on this site. Naturally … this caught my attention!

    Found buried, but Alive!

    May 23rd, 2005

An Amber Alert went out in Southern Florida early Sunday morning for an 8-year old little girl. Every time I hear or read the words Amber Alert … I think of Amber Hagerman and how things ended so horribly for her in 1996. This time the little girl was found in time! Seven hours after being reported missing the young girl was rescued by Police Sgt. Mike Hall.

Left to die in a trash bin under rocks and concrete blocks, and unable to scream for help, let alone move, the 8-year-old girl still believed someone would find her.

Rescuers feared the worst, but the mood turned jubilant when they saw the girl’s fingers move and realized she was alive.
~ Kidnapped Girl Found Buried Alive

The young girl, even after her horrible ordeal, always knew someone would come for her and just waited for her rescuers to arrive! She is definitely a strong little girl and that strength will aid her well as she grows up.

The one who put her there was Milagro Cunningham, age 17, who was staying with the same family as the little girl. He has confessed and been charged with “attempted murder, sexual battery on a child under 12, and false imprisonment of a victim under age 13.”

This story even caught the attention of international media.
    The Scotsman, BBC

The New Era of Amber Alerts now extends beyond television, radio, and those digital traffic signs.

Congressman Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph) applauded Thursday’s unveiling of a new wireless AMBER Alert initiative that will promptly notify wireless subscribers of a child’s abduction in their immediate vicinity.

If anything good can be said to come out of such a horrible event, all the children that are saved by Amber Alerts is it … and maybe there is some meaning in Amber’s senseless death.

Thank God that Diana Gabriella Sanchez was found and that she was not harmed. And thank God for the Amber Alerts system. Colorado’s Daily Reporter May 22, 2005

Every time the Amber Alert system has been activated [31 times] in Colorado, the child has returned home safely.

    Today’s talk of the Right

    May 22nd, 2005

This blog caught my attention today with the title “Leaving the left.”

The post refers to an article written by Keith Thompson appearing in the San Francisco Chronicle today. Thompson is was a member of the liberal Left. His awakening to the true nature of the Left has finally come to fruition… and he is leaving! The title of his article leaves no room for doubt … “Leaving the left, I can no longer abide the simpering voices of self-styled progressives — people who once championed solidarity.”

My estrangement hasn’t happened overnight. Out of the corner of my eye I watched what was coming for more than three decades, yet refused to truly see. Now it’s all too obvious. Leading voices in America’s “peace” movement are actually cheering against self-determination for a long-suffering Third World country because they hate George W. Bush more than they love freedom.

Hopefully more people who are beginning to see that the Democrat party of today is vastly different that the Democrat party of yesterday, will be inspired by this article to also leave the Left. It is a sad truth that so many are unable to accept … the once strong (misguided, but strong) Democratic party is failing their own members miserably.

Several bloggers have already written about this, I listed a few of the better ones … whether or not Thompson is one to be admired, he is to be applauded for leaving the Left … now I just hope he stays Right!
