Progress!
New vaccines against two killer viruses, Ebola and Marburg, have been proven 100 percent effective in monkey tests, scientists reported on Monday.
… wow.
So claims the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, Canada with help from the U. S. Army. The two viruses are among the most deadly and currently incurable. The CDC has pages on both Ebola hemorrhagic fever and its cousin Marburg hemorrhagic fever. This is fabulous news, if the vaccine continues to be successful, not only for those in areas that have active and somewhat frequent outbreaks …
Marburg has killed more than 300 in Angola since last year and an Ebola outbreak in the Republic of Congo recently took 10 lives.
… but also for everyone who is a possible target of bioterrorism … which is everyone, everywhere. Terrorism these days has so many faces and pops up in so many different places, that no precaution is too much, especially one protecting against an incurable, easily spread, very deadly disease.
A human vaccine — expected within five to six years — may be available within two years for “compassionate use” to treat outbreaks. It would give vital protection to hospital workers and family caregivers who often contract illness through close contact.
At the very least, the vaccine may be able to save the lowland gorilla from extinction. The western lowland gorilla is considered an endangered species partly because of their proneness to Ebola and illness of that sort.
I hope that this is just the beginning of great things to come from the National Microbiology Laboratory and the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). When a cure is so illusive, a vaccine is the best alternative. Amidst frequent jokes at Canada’s expense, and even a fairly logical blog post supporting an U. S. led peremptory invasion of Canada
… great advances in medical research into deadly diseases with vaccines and hopefully cures may be Canada’s pièce de résistance!

I saw this story yesterday too, and my reaction was exactly the same…wow! If anyone fails to be “wowed” by this discovery, I recommend reading “The Hot Zone.” Can’t remember the author, but a quick search on Amazon should do the trick. As we say in our family, “it will curdle your blood,” no pun intended. Truly an amazing break-through.

“Fairly logical” is as a very positive response to advocating an invasion of Canada.
I mean c’mon, its like kicking a puppy that follows you around!
